i have changed my opinion because i was one of the Airbourne are just AC/DC rip off and GVT are just Led Zeppelin, but as you say they might be heavily influenced but they have their own thing going on and importantly they are young and touring so we can actually see them live. I also used to think The Darkness were just AC/DC and Queen rip offs, but AC/DC and Queen are two of my favourite bands so what's the problem ? I've since appreciated The Darkness for their own unique spin on things and seen them a few times.

I think young musicians will always discover and form rock bands. I'm more worried about where the new fans come from. Certainly there's no shortage of young bands playing rock music, but the fans on the whole seem to be ageing. The whole New Wave of Classic Rock thing for example seems to be an almost endless supply of bands largely supported by a relative handful of dedicated fans

My son is a big fan of yours since he was probably 8. He's now 12. Billy Balloon Head being a big one for him, another is The Day We Fell. He's listened to my music in the car - Wildhearts and Them Crooked Vultures being early favourites, as well as yourselves . But now he's got as far as AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Metallica and Skindred. I've tried to introduce him to some stuff I'm less keen on, young 'un stuff, because I'm aware that at some point, he's got to find his own taste too. In terms of family friendly festivals, my son and I went to Maid of Stone last year. He loved it! Sadly, we missed it this year to see you. But, he met Skindred at a signing there (his idea and he was cooler about it than me!) and made it to the barrier for them too! We got some looks afterwards as he emerged from in front of the mosh pit! He's now desperate to join me and my friends at Download.

I find the music sharing and educating swings both ways. I take my daughters to a lot of concerts, some of which they like and some they don’t, but I also will listen to songs they recommend to me and will go to some gigs they want to see. I suffer through a lot of lame acts, but every now and then they point out a good song to me. What’s the last good artist you’ve had someone turn you on to?

So here's a question for you. Radio edits - how much do you have to do with them? I heard Missing on TV on planet rock the other day, and it seems that they're doing an edit that reduces the middle section down, and for me that doesn't quite spoil the song, but it's close...

My Dad was into 70s rock (Deep Purple, Led Zep, Yes, Genesis), but for me it was a school friend who had an older brother who was into GnR and Iron Maiden. It was a lot later that I got into the stuff my Dad was into. But this was the 90s... My daughter quite liked Black Sabbath when she was a baby, not so much now she's 4, but I'm working on getting her to play the ukulele as a gateway to a proper guitar...

Who does it fall to? Me - Dads and specifically, older dads! Daughter and her mates in the local girls footie team know that, if I'm doing the driving, they'll get Wagons, Scarlet Rebels, vintage Quo, ACDC, GUN, etc. Last quote from one of them - "Can I go with you and your dad cos the music's better?". Guess this backs up your comments about girls and women in rock music as well.

Finally, someone has actually said exactly what I've been asking for the past decade or so. You no longer get rock or indie bands in the UK Top 40 anymore, because of streaming - which in my opinion should never have been included towards the Official Singles Charts. Not one of my favourite bands can get hits anymore and most of them had their last hits roundabout 2007-2009 just before streaming was included. Streaming has hurt genuine sales and what you see in the chart is not even a true reflection of what people are buying, it's more or less about what a younger generation is streaming. I truly believe that had streaming not been incorporated towards the chart, then Ed Sheeran would not have had all those No.1's. I also say that Oasis maybe were the last British rock 'n' roll band, who have left an massive empty void since their split that has not been filled since, and no British guitar band has ever been as successful as them since.

  • @tonybroken6353

i think the singles charts gets worse every year, even the 00s sounds good compared to now, it's just not trendy anymore to have bands and especially rock, hopefully it will come around again so rock bands can make a decent living.

the question "what is a band?" is really important - for me its someting about having permanant band members who play an instrument as their main role - so erasure are a band, but take that are not? but its complicated - what about heilung?!?!? maybe they dont define themselves as a band anyway? chemical brothers? what about 50s/60s bands - four tops, supremes, are they bands or not? i've confused myself!

Pendulum live are a proper band, at least they were when i saw them (I'm on their live at Brixton album, they were amazing that night), though i think in the studio they're more of a solo act. Which reminds me of Ghost - a one man band in the studio (i think he gets someone in to play solos that Jo Whiley will love), but live it's a different story. Are they a band? And then the latest incarnation of The Wildhearts. It's always been about Ginger, but now he's replaced everyone is it still a band, or is it a label for a solo project?
